If you have free time to give whether you have no time in the fire service or are a seasoned veteran in another department, Seat Pleasant could be a good fit for you. Currently we are responsible for staffing (except for the ambulance**) everyday from 1500 to 0700 the next morning and then every weekend from 1500 hours Friday until 0700 Monday morning. Recently due to the budget, our career personnel have been removed on holidays altogether making volunteers responsible for staffing everything during the 24 hour period. In addition, our call load has increased due to the removal of career personnel at neighboring stations essentially making our first due larger. If you think you may be interested, please contact us. Email Bryce@gwmail.gwu.edu if interested!Recent Incidents August 30th - Holy crap ! A fire ! - Thats right kids, the drought has temporarily ended. Just before 0630 this morning, Engine 83 was alerted to the 1400 Blk of Capitol View Terr, in Company 33's area, for a building fire. E331 arrived with smoke showing from a townhouse and advanced a line. Engine 83 arrived shortly after and picked up 33's line and ran the 400 off the rear. The crew from 83 advanced upstairs to check for extension, vent, and search. No fire was found so the crew redeployed to the first floor where it was found that the bulk of the fire was in the basement and had burned through the floor. Crews opened up a large enough hole and with the stairs burned through as well, Engine 83 lowered an attic ladder to the basement allowing access to the rest of the fire. The fire was extinguished and units were held for extensive overhaul. Engine 83 picked up and returned in about 90 minutes. August 28th - Engine 83 and Ambulance 88 on first due trauma - Well, still no fires but the runs keep coming. At 2339 hours Engine 83 and Ambulance 88 were alerted to the 23rd and final run of the day at Seat Pleasant Dr & Jadeleaf Ave for the motorcycle accident. Units arrived to find the same and a male suffering from numerous injuries including a fractured femur. The patient was stabilized and loaded into Ambulance 88 who went to a local trauma center with Medic 30. Engine 83 also made a trip to the hospital to pick up personnel. Engine 83 returned in about 45 minutes and the ambulance in about 90 minutes. August 19th - Still no fires, but we run another shooting - Around 2030 hours, Engine 83 and Ambulance 88 were alerted to the 7200 Blk of G St, in Seat Pleasant, for one shot. Units arrived with police to find a male suffering from a single gunshot wound. The crew treated and packaged the patient who was taken to a local trauma center by Ambulance 88. Engine 83 returned in about 15 minutes and the Ambulance in about 90 minutes. Still no fires in the month of August and only 4 since July 1st. Business is slow. August 17th - Engine 83 on double shooting, 1 victim dies - Just after 2100 hours, Engine 83 was alerted to the 6800 Blk of Walker Mill Rd, in Company 26's area, for a report of a shooting. While enroute, updates were given that there was supposedly 2 people suffering from gunshot wounds and additional EMS units were added. Engine 83 arrived with police to find a victim shot multiple times in the upper body and not breathing and another victim shot in the leg. The crew of 6 split up and provided care to both patients who were packaged and taken to area trauma centers. The one patient did die from his injuries. Engine 83 cleared in about 20 minutes and hours later returned to the scene after the investigation was done for a wash down. August 14th - Engine 83 and Ambulance 88 run car into home - Around 0400 hours, Engine 83 and Ambulance 88 were alerted to the 100 Blk of West Mill Ave, in the Peppermill section of Seat Pleasant, for a car into a home with people trapped. Units from 8 arrived to find a vehicle that had gone all the way into the bottom floor of a house. Immediately the crew from 83 entered the home and began checking for victims finding two trapped in separate bedrooms. The crew along with RE33 worked to remove both victims from the structure which took about 5 minutes or so. Both occupants were taken to a local trauma center for a check up. The 3 occupants of the car however had bailed out prior to FD arrival. One was found about 4 blocks away covered in blood and taken to a local trauma center by M30. A second occupant was caught on the scene by police as she had come back looking for her purse and the third was rounded up shortly after. Engine 83 remained on the scene for about an hour until Squad 22 could remove the vehicle from the home. Ambulance 88 returned in about 2 hours. August 7th - Engine 83 and Ambulance 88 on stabbing - Less than 30 minutes after returning from the fatal accident, Ambulance 88 and Engine 83 were alerted to Central Ave & Topeka Ave, in Company 5's area, for a report of one stabbed. Units from 8 arrived with police to find a male in the 400 Blk of Topeka Ave suffering from a serious stab wound. The patient was treated by the units from 8 and taken to a local trauma center by Ambulance 88. Engine 83 returned home in about 20 minutes and the Ambulance in about 90 minutes. August 6th - Ambulance 88 runs fatal motorcycle accident - Just before midnight, Ambulance 88 was alerted to the 6900 Blk of Walker Mill Rd, in Company 26's area, for an accident involving a motorcycle. Units arrived to find an accident involving a car and a motorcycle with the rider down suffering from numerous traumatic injuries and not breathing. Crews initiated CPR and quickly loaded the patient into Ambulance 88. Ambulance 88 along with M29 transported the patient to a local trauma center where he was pronounced dead a short time later. Ambulance 88 returned to service in about 2 hours. August 3rd - Engine 82 on shooting in Fairmount Heights - Around 1900 hours, Engine 82 was alerted to the 4800 Blk of Leroy Gorham Dr, in Company 38's area, for a report of one shot. Units arrived with police to find a male shot in the mouth. The patient was treated and taken to a local trauma center by A38 and M30. Engine 82 returned in about 15 minutes. In addition, Chief 8A marked out prior to this call with a male who had been assaulted in the 5700 Blk of Addison Rd in Seat Pleasant. Ambulance 88 responded and took a male with a broken jaw to a local trauma center. August 1st - Engine 82 & Ambulance 88 on early morning stabbing - Just before 0400 hours, Engine 82 and Ambulance 88 were alerted to the 6600 Blk of Ronald Rd, in Seat Pleasant, for one stabbed. Units arrived with police to find a male patient stabbed once in the back. The patient was treated, loaded, and taken to a local trauma center by Ambulance 88. Engine 82 returned in about 15 minutes and the Ambulance returned in about 90 minutes. July 31st - Fatal triple shooting and back to back fires for Seat Pleasant - Just before 0430 hours, Engine 82 and Ambulance 88 were alerted to the unit block of Cindy La, in Seat Pleasant, for a report of one shot. Units arrived with police to find a male suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. The patient was treated and loaded into Ambulance 88 and taken to a local trauma center with Medic 46 where the patient was pronounced dead. Prior to arrival at the trauma center, a vehicle showed up with 2 additional victims from the shooting. These patients were moved into the hospital and treated for various gunshot wounds. Engine 82 cleared in about 15 minutes and Ambulance 88 returned in about 90 minutes. Then around 1630 hours, Engine 82 was alerted to the 6800 Blk of Holly Berry Ct, in Company 26's area, for a townhouse fire. E26 arrived with several sheds on fire to the rear with extension to a deck. Engine 82 arrived next but kept their third due position and layed a line to the rear and ran the 250 and extinguished a shed and a fence. The assignment was scaled back to E26, E8, and T37 for overhaul and investigations. Engine 82 cleared in just under 90 minutes. Just a few minutes after clearing, Engine 82 was dispatched to the 10100 Blk of Prince Pl, in Company 46's area, for an apartment fire. E46 arrived to find smoke showing and a working fire on the 2nd floor. Engine 82 arrived third and advanced a line to the floor above and forced several doors, searched, and checked for extension. The fire was extinguished and the assignment scaled back. Engine 82 cleared this run in about an hour. July 28th - Ambulance 88 runs mid morning trauma on Central Ave - Just after 0800 hours, Ambulance 88 was alerted for an unconscious person after a car jacking and abduction in the 6100 Blk of Central Ave in Company 5's area. Units arrived with police to find a male who had been beat in the head with a hammer and had his vehicle taken. The patient was treated and taken to a local trauma center. Ambulance 88 cleared in about 90 minutes. As a follow up, the vehicle was recovered and suspects arrested after another robbery and brief pursuit the next day in Arlington County, Va. July 21st - Engine 82 & Engine 83 on early morning Task Force - Around midnight, units were dispatched to the 2200 Blk of Anvil La, in Company 29's area, for a townhouse fire. Units arrived to find heavy fire on all 3 floors of a townhouse with possible extension. Command quickly requested a task force bringing E82, E83, and SQ47. Engine 82 was directed by command while enroute to report to the scene and advance a line into exposure B. Engine 82 performed their duty and then were directed to advance to the 2nd floor of the fire building to hit hot spots and check for extension. Due to the instability of the floor and stairs (1 firefighter from 42 had already fallen through but was not injured), the crew advanced their line via a ladder to the top floor and worked for about 30 minutes. Engine 83's crew was directed by command to report to the scene and check for extension in the D exposure. The crew from 83 advanced into the home and checked the attic area finding heavy smoke but no fire extension. Engine 82 was relieved by by E411 and both pumpers from 8 returned in about 90 minutes. Times have been slow recently. Other than some traumas and a fatal accident taken in by the ambulance this has really been the only newsworthy event. Oh, and the 8 or so tool jobs we have missed in the 2 weeks the squad has been out of service. Oh well. Last pic courtesy Jim Davis July 11th - Engine 82 and Ambulance 88 on accident with 1 trapped - Just before 0600 hours, Engine 82 and Ambulance 88 were alerted to Central Ave & Addison Rd, by the firehouse, for an accident as the result of a police chase. Units arrived to find several vehicles with people trapped in one vehicle. The units from 8 began patient care until Squad 22 arrived and began extrication. The patients were removed and taken to a local trauma center. Engine 82 cleared in 30 minutes while the ambulance returned hom in just over an hour. July 8th - Morning fatal accident then evening trauma for Seat Pleasant - While Ambulance 88 was still on the previous trauma, Engine 82 was alerted to East Capitol St & Crown St, in Seat Pleasant, for an accident with 1 pinned. Engine 82 arrived to find a single vehicle into a pole with 1 pinned and not breathing. The crew began first aid efforts as well as attempting to free the victim until Squad 46 arrived. The ALS providers arrived on the Medic unit and declared the victim a priority 4 due to nature of injuries and no heartbeat. Engine 82 picked up and cleared in about 30 minutes. Later in the day around 2109 hours, Engine 82 and Ambulance 88 responded to the 6400 Blk of Central Ave, in Seat Pleasant, for a pedestrian struck. This has been the site of many serious and fatal pedestrian strucks in the past and this one was no different. The victim had been hit at about 40 miles an hour and thrown after hitting the windshield. The crews from 8 stabilized the patient and loaded him into Ambulance 88 who transported the victim to a local trauma center with PA26. Engine 82 cleared in about 15 minutes while the ambulance returned in about an hour. July 7th - Company 8 takes in a few traumas on the day - Around 1430 hours, Ambulance 88 responded to the 1300 Blk of Eli Pl, in Company 38's area, for a motorcycle accident. Units arrived to find a rider down with multiple injuries and abrasions after crashing. The patient was treated and loaded into Ambulance 88 and taken to a local trauma center. Ambulance 88 returned in about 2 hours after clearing and decon. Later in the day around 2315 hours, Engine 82 and Ambulance 88 were alerted to Southern Ave & Fable St, in Company 5's area, for an accident. Units arrived to find a vehicle, like many, many before it, that had hit the wall by the cemetery. The car had 4 teenagers in it who had been running from the police in a stolen car when they lost control. Additional EMS units were called to assist and all 4 were taken to local trauma centers with Ambulance 88 taking 2 of them. Engine 82 cleared in about 30 minutes with the ambulance returning in just over 2 hours. July 3rd - Company 8 on first due fire with person trapped - Around 1830 hours, Engine 82 was alerted to the 6800 Blk of Central Ave, in Seat Pleasant, for an apartment on fire. Engine 82 arrived to find smoke showing from the second floor and citizens reporting 1 trapped. Squad 8 was on a medic local in 5's area and cleared arriving just behind Engine 82. The crews from 8 found a fire in a back bedroom and the resident trying to remove a burning mattress on the balcony. The engine crew extinguished the fire while the squad crew assisted the engine with opening up and some overhaul. The resident that was in the apartment was removed and taken to a local burn unit by EMS units with both burns to the body as well as the lungs in addition to smoke inhalation. The units from 8 picked up and returned in an hour. June 26th - Engine 83 takes another trip to Foote St for a house fire - Just after 0330 hours, Engine 83 was alerted to the 6200 Blk of Foote St, in little Detroit, for a house on fire with an injured person. Engine 83 arrived minutes later to find a house in the 6300 Blk of Foote St with with heavy fire on both floors and advanced a line. The crew pushed their way through the heavy fire conditions and extinguished the first floor and then repositioned their line upstairs and extinguished the second floor as well. The truck companies worked to open up the upstairs and access the attic to extinguish the fire that had extended there due to the balloon frame construction. The fire was extinguished and units were held for extensive overhaul. One resident received critical burns and one member of Engine 83 received very minor burns, both were taken to Medstar. Photos courtesy Jim Davis June 24th - Company 8 takes in two fires on the day - Just after midnight Engine 83 was alerted to the 1600 Blk of Forest Park Dr, in Company 37's area, for a townhouse fire. E37 arrived to find smoke showing and advanced a line. Engine 83 arrived and after laying a line advanced a back up line inside as crews found a kitchen fire on the first floor. The crew from 83 took their line upstairs and checked for extension and did a quick search. The fire was extinguished and the assignment scaled back. Engine 83 returned in about 40 minutes. Later around 1800 hours, Engine 83 and Squad 8 responded to the 7100 Blk of Fresno St, in Seat Pleasant, for a house on fire. Units from 8 arrived and found smoke and fire from the second floor. Engine 83 advanced a line and extinguished all fire while Squad 8 did a search and opened up. The fire was extinguished and the assignment scaled back to the units from 8 and TW33. Engine 83 and Squad 8 returned in about 90 minutes. First picture courtesy Kentland June 23rd - Central Gardens shootout leaves child with minor injury - Around 1545 hours, many calls were received from the 6800 Blk of Central Ave as well as the unit block of Cindy La reporting up to a dozen gunshots and people running and screaming. Soon after, a call was received that a child had been struck by a stray bullet in an apartment at 6802 Central Ave. Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 responded to the scene and with police found a child who was lucky and had been only grazed by one of the bullets. Squad 8 returned to service as did the ambulance after obtaining a refusal. Ahh summertime. June 21st - Engine 83 pulls one from well involved auto - Around 1700 hours or so, Engine 83 was alerted to the 7200 Blk of G St, in the Gregory Farms section of Seat Pleasant, for an auto fire. Upon arrival, they discovered the usual auto well involved and pulled a line to extinguish the same. As the crew approached the vehicle, they noticed a person still inside and quickly knocked down the fire and worked on removing the victim. EMS units and a helicopter were called to assist with the incident. Once the person was removed, part of the crew finished extinguishing the fire while the rest began EMS efforts to the barely breathing victim. The patient was flown to an area burn center with severe burns over his entire body. Engine 83 picked up and returned in about 90 minutes after the investigation by police and fire investigators. June 20th - Engine 83 and Squad 8 on Foote St house fire - Around 0030, Engine 83 was sent to the 6200 Blk of Foote St, in Seat Pleasant, for an investigation of a fire alarm. The crew arrived and soon found heavy smoke showing from a house and requested the box. Squad 8, who was returning from the fire on Larchmont, responded as well and arrived second. Engine 83 found a room in the rear off with extension into the hallway and extinguished the same. Squad 8 searched, vented, and opened up for the engine crew. The fire was quickly extinguished and the assignment scaled back to the units from 8. Engine 83 and Squad 8 picked up and returned to service in about 2 hours. June 19th - Squad 8 gets some late night work on Larcmont Ave - While Engine 83 was transferred to 33 for a fire in Landover Hills, Squad 8 was alerted to the 1200 Blk of Larchmont Ave, in Company 17's area, for a house fire with people trapped. E26 arrived to find nothing evident and advanced a line. Squad 8 arrived with E26 and upon making entry discovered smoke conditions and a working fire on the second floor. Squad 8 opened up, vented, and searched the house which was split into separate apartments while E26 extinguished the fire. The assignment was scaled back to Squad 8, E26, and T37. Two occupants were taken to a local hospital for minor injuries and smoke inhalation. Squad 8 picked up and returned in about an hour. June 18th - Accidents bring trauma and extrication for Company 8 - Just before 1300 hours, Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 were alerted to the 7700 Blk of Central Ave, in Seat Pleasant, for an accident involving a motorcycle. Units arrived to find a motorcycle that had collided with a tractor trailer and the rider suffering from traumatic injuries to the leg. The patient was treated and loaded into Ambulance 88 and taken to a local trauma center along with Medic 30. Squad 8 returned in about 15 minutes and 88 returned in about 90 minutes. Later around 1500 hours, Squad 8 was alerted to Fed Ex Field, in Company 33's area, for an accident with a vehicle in the trees and one trapped. The units from 33 arrived and confirmed the same and TW33 began extrication. Squad 8 arrived and assisted by stabilizing and removing a door as well as the B post. The patient was removed and taken to a local trauma center. Squad 8 returned to service in about 25 minutes. June 17th - Squad 8 pops door on Silver Hill Rd - Around 1120 hours while responding on a 29 Box, Squad 8 was diverted to an accident at Suitland Pkwy & Silver Hill Rd, also in Company 29's area, for an accident with 1 trapped. Squad 8 arrived and stabilized the vehicle and popped a door open. Three patients were taken to area hospitals with various injuries. Squad 8 picked up and returned in about 20 minutes. June 15th - Squad 8 works on overturned bread truck - Around 0400 hours, Squad 8 was alerted to the 500 Blk of Largo Rd, in Company 46's area, for an accident with a truck overturned. Units from 46 arrived to find a large box truck on its side resting on a fence in the median. The driver was not injured however he was stuck on top of the unstable truck. Squad 8 arrived and stabilized the vehicle with the rescue struts. Once this was done, a roof ladder was thrown to the vehicle and the driver was brought down safely. Squad 8 picked up and returned in about 20 minutes. June 13th - Squad 8 runs male with hand in conveyor belt - Around 0700 hours, Squad 8 was alerted to the 1700 Blk of Olive St, in Company 38's area, for a male with his hand in a conveyor belt. Units arrived to find a male who was no longer trapped but was suffering from severe trauma to the hand including an amputated thumb. Squad 8 assisted EMS personnel with treating the patient who was loaded and taken to a local trauma center. Squad 8 cleared in just under 30 minutes. June 12th - Saturday brings a few traumas for Company 8 - Around 0600 hours Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 were alerted to Addison Rd S & Ronald Rd, in Seat Pleasant, for a pedestrian struck. Units arrived to find a victim of a hit and run suffering from facial injuries. The crews treated and loaded the victim who was taken to a local trauma center. Squad 8 cleared in about 15 minutes and the ambulance returned in 90 minutes. Later in the day around 1300 hours, Ambulance 88 was alerted to Central Ave & Garrett A Morgan Bl, in Company 37's area, for a motorcycle accident. Units arrived to find a rider down suffering from a few injuries. The patient was packaged and taken to a local trauma center by Ambulance 88 and M46. Ambulance 88 cleared this call in about an hour. June 11th - Ambulance 88 runs stabbing in DIstrict Heights - Just after 2230 hours, Ambulance 88 was alerted to the 1900 Blk of Rochelle Ave, in Company 26's area, for a report of one stabbed. Units arrived with police to find a teenage male stabbed once in the upper body. The patient was treated and taken to a local hospital by Ambulance 88 who clearfed just after midnight. June 9th - Engine 82 runs 4th due on evening house fire - Just before 1830 hours, Engine 82 responded to the 1800 Blk of Clark Pl, in Company 17's area, for a house fire. E17 arrived to find smoke showing from the attic of a vacant house and advanced a line. Engine 82 arrived and picked up E27's line and ran the 400 off the back of 82 to the rear as an additional line. The fire was extinguished and the assignment scaled back. Engine 82 picked up and returned in about an hour. June 8th - Ambulance 88 on late night shooting in District Heights - Just prior to midnight, Ambulance 88 was alerted to the 7200 Blk Lansdale St, in Company 26's area, for a shooting. Units arrived with police to find a male that was shot in the upper body and began treating the patient. The patient was loaded and taken to a local trauma center by Ambulance 88 and PA26. Ambulance 88 returned to service in just under 2 hours. June 7th - Engine 82 on night time house fire in Ritchie - Just before midnight, Engine 82 was alerted to the 1400 Blk of Shady Glen Dr, in Company 37's area, for a house fire. Truck 37 arrived first to find smoke showing from a single family split foyer house. Engine 82 arrived just behind E26 and picked up their line and advanced the 400 off the rear of 82 as a back up line. E26 and T37 made their way inside and found a kitchen well involved with extension into the adjoining room on the upper floor. The crew from Engine 82 advanced their charged hoseline to the top of the stairs and stood fast as E26 attempted to get their line in place. Due to some technical difficulties and the lack of water in 26's line, the crew from 8 moved forward and extinguished the fire on the upper floor and began opening up checking for extension. The fire was extinguished and command scaled back the incident. Engine 82 picked up and returned in just under an hour. June 5th - Squad 8 & Ambulance 88 on daytime first due shooting - Around 1730 hours, Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 were alerted to the unit block of Cindy La, in Seat Pleasant, for a report of one shot. Units arrived with police to find a male who had been sitting in front of his building and was shot once in the upper body. Units treated the victim who was taken to a local trauma center. Squad 8 cleared in about 15 minutes and the ambulance returned in just over an hour. June 4th - Ambulance transports 1 from fire, Squad 8 extricates police officer - Just after 0800 hours, Ambulance 88 was alerted to the 3800 Blk of Kenilworth Ave, in Company 9's area, for an apartment fire with people trapped. E9 arrived to find fire involving a first floor apartment and extinguished the same. Ambulance 88 arrived and treated and transported a female resident suffering from burns received in the fire. The ambulance returned in just over 2 hours. Later in the day around 2000 hours, Ambulance 88 came across an accident in the 5200 Blk of Marlboro Pk, in Company 26's area, involving a police officer trapped in his cruiser which brought Squad 8 to the scene. The crew stabilized the cruiser and removed the driver side door allowing the officer to be removed. Squad 8 picked up and returned in about 20 minutes. Ambulance 88 transported 1 patient and returned in about 2 hours. Chief 26 had the command. June 1st - It may be a new month but the calls keep coming - So as you probably read below, our holiday weekend was busy but why stop when the weekend ends. Between midnight and 0500, Company 8 answered 10 of the days 38 runs including helping A88 and PA26 who were "involved" with a violent patient in the first due and then just after 0400 hours with a dump truck that had plumetted off a bridge from the BW Pkwy down onto RT 50. The driver was not trapped however Squad 8 remained onscene for about 40 minutes to help with lights and to help spread down absorbent with the Hazmat Company due to the ruptured saddle tanks. Later in the evening around 1800 hours, Engine 82 and Chief 8A headed across the street to the Addison Rd Metro Station as fire stations across the county were asked to participate in a PINIP as the northside continued their efforts to educate neighbors about the dangers of CO Poisoning. This followed the tragic incident in Hyattsville the other day where fire dept personnel found three men deceased in a home with CO levels over 300 PPM. A generator was found running in the basement of the home. We ask everyone to use motorized equipment safely and to install CO detectors in their homes. Then to round off the day, Squad 8, Ambulance 88, and Chief 8A were alerted to the 200 Blk of 69th St, in Seat Pleasant, for a car into a house. Units from 8 arrived to find the same and of course the driver long gone as he was seen running from the scene. The vehicle however had struck a gas meter and with no way to control the flow, several residences in the area were evacuated as a precaution until the gas company could secure the leak. Squad 8 cleared in about 40 minutes and later returned to assist in ventilating some houses. Chief 8A had the command. May 31st - Holiday weekend ends with 4 fires for Company 8 - Monday started slow for Company 8 allowing personnel to get in some airbag/cribbing/saws training for the Squad as well as some training on Seat Pleasant engine company operations. Then just after noon with the Squad on a street alarm in 33's area, Engine 82 was alerted to the 5700 Blk of J St, in Company 38's area, for a house fire. Engine 82 arrived first and found smoke conditions and a fire in the kitchen. The crew removed an occupant who had been trying to extinguish the fire (and did a halfway decent job actually) and held it to themselves and Squad 8 for overhaul. Chief 8 (McGill) and Chief 8B (Brenner) were also onscene. The company cleared out the kicthen and picked up in about 30 minutes. Then just before 1530 hours, Engine 82, Squad 8, Chief 8, and Chief 8B were alerted for the townhouse fire in the 1600 Blk of Forest Park Dr in Company 37's area. Chief 26 arrived first and reported heavy fire from the first floor. Squad 8 was the first piece of apparatus onscene and went to work getting inside and doing a search. Engine 82 arrived and took their assigned position as 3rd due engine and layed a secondary line and went to the rear. The crew then ran a line behind the houses, removed a wood fence, and made entry to the rear where they discovered heavy fire conditions as well. Crews worked for a bit and the fire was extinguished. Chief 8 had interior and Chief 8B had the exposure group. Units from 8 cleared in about 90 minutes. Then around 2000 hours, Squad 8 and Chief 8 responded to the 3500 Blk of Silver Park Dr, in Company 29's area, for smoke in the building. Units arrived with smoke showing from the top floor in the rear and advanced a line. Squad 8 arrived in the rear and went to work throwing ladders to get over a large iron fence and helping E26 get their line in place. Another ladder was thrown to the top floor as well as E29 extinguished fire in a vacant apartment. Chief 8 once again had interior and Ambulance 88 came on the working fire dispatch. Finally around 2115 hours, Engine 82 and Squad 8 were alerted to the 10200 blk of Prince Pl, in Company 46's area, for fire in a trash room. E46 arrived to find a storage room on fire in the basement and advanced a line. Squad 8 arrived and made their way to the fire room and worked on a search as well as searching the other floors as there were reports of people trapped. Engine 82 took their position as the 4th due engine out on Prince Pl and picked up E332's line. The crew then advanced a back up line to the fire room and stood by as the sprinkler had extinguished most of the fire. The units from 8 picked up and returned in an hour. Company 8 answered another 30 runs for the day bringing the total to 124 runs for the holiday weekend. Training 5700 Blk of J St 1600 Blk Forest Park Dr (first pic courtesy Ritchie) 10200 Blk of Prince Pl May 30th - Holiday goes on with traumas, fatal accident, shooting, & extrication - The holiday weekend continued for Company 8 and didnt let up. Just before 0300 hours, Squad 8 was alerted for an accident on the Beltway near Ritchie Marlboro Rd. Units arrived to find several vehicles and a victim laying in the roadway. After a quick assessment, the victim in the roadway was declared dead and units focused on the other victims in the cars. Squad 8 provided some lights and assisted EMS personnel with their patients. Squad 8 returned to service in about 25 minutes. Later in the morning before 0930 hours, Ambulance 88 was alerted to the 1100 Blk of Hill Rd, in Company 38's area, for an accident. Ambulance 88 arrived and packaged one patient who was taken to a local trauma center. The unit returned to service in about 90 minutes. Then around 2030 hours, Squad 8 was alerted to Veterans Pkwy & RT 50, in Company 28's area, for an accident with 1 trapped. E28 arrived to find the same and began patient care. Squad 8 arrived and stabilized the vehicle removing the doors and roof as well as slightly pushing the dash. The patient was removed and taken to a local trauma center. Squad 8 cleared this call in about 40 minutes. Last but not least, around 2200 hours, Ambulance 88 was alerted to the 2200 Blk of Columbia Pl, in Company 33's area, for one shot. Units arrived with police and found a male on the ground shot in the upper body. The patient was loaded and taken to a local trauma center. Ambulance 88 returned in about an hour. The company was kept busy with these and other calls all day answering 35 of them in the 24 hour period. Veterans Pkwy & Route 50 May 29th - Ambulance 88 runs early morning trauma in Fairmount Heights - Just before 0430 hours, Ambulance 88 was called to Sheriff Rd & Addison Rd, in Company 38's area, for an injured person from a fight. Ambulance 88 arrived to find a male who was semi conscious after being struck in the head with a bat. The crew quickly stabilized the patient and made their way to a local trauma center where the patient eventually became unconscious. Ambulance 88 returned to service around 0600 hours. May 28th - Company 8 runs trauma on Central Ave, begins holiday weekend - Around 1718 hours, Squad 8, Ambulance 88, and Chief 8A (Johnson) responded to the intersection of Central Ave & Norair Dr, in Company 37's area, for an accident with a vehicle overturned. E37 arrived to find a vehicle that had rolled several times and landed in a vacant lot. The lone occupant made his way out of the vehicle and the Squad was returned. Chief 8A had the command and Ambulance 88 treated and loaded the patient who was taken to a local trauma center. Ambulance 88 cleared in about 90 minutes. May 26th - Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 remove child trapped under vehicle - Just after 2030 hours, Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 were alerted to the area of Cedar Heights Dr and Lee Pl, in Company 38's area, for a child hit by a car and trapped underneath it. After several different and updated locations were given, Ambulance 88 arrived in the 6200 Blk of L St to find a vehicle up on a hill, still in reverse, and on top of a child and his bike. Squad 8 worked their way through the sea of police cars to the scene and went to work stabilizing and preparing to use the airbags to lift the vehicle. After stabilization, the crew slowly lifted the vehicle off the child to allow the crew from 88 to slide him out and onto a back board. The child was transported to a local trauma center luckily with just minor injuries. The driver of the vehicle was detained by police for being under the influence of CDS at the time. E38 stood by with a line and E33 assisted with cribbing up once the vehicle was lifted. Squad 8 cleared in about 40 minutes after picking up and the ambulance returned in about 90 minutes. May 25th - Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 on evening shooting - Just before 1730 hours, Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 were alerted to the area of Larchmont Ave and Emo St, in Company 5's area, for a report of one shot. Several reports had come in reporting males chasing another shooting at him, the victim running up and down Emo St, and up to 20 shots fired at different intersections in the area. Sure enough, units from 8 arrived with police to find a male shot in the upper body. The patient was treated and taken to a local trauma center by M46. The units from 8 cleared in about 20 minutes. May 22nd - Two first due fires for the return of Engine 83 - After months of being out of service for something (no one is sure what was wrong), Engine 83 finally returned home and went back in service. Its first run came around 0230 hours when the crew was alerted to the 6300 Blk of Foote St, in the "Little Detroit" section of Seat Pleasant, for a house fire. Engine 83 arrived with a vacant house and found smoke showing. The crew forced entry and found many small set fires throughout the first floor. The crew extinguished all and the assignment was scaled back to 1 and 1. Engine 83 picked up and returned in about an hour after the investigators were done. Later in the day around 1930 hours, Engine 83 was alerted to the 900 Blk of Larchmont Ave, in Company 5's first due, for a house on fire. Engine 83 arrived first to find smoke showing from the top floor and advanced a line. The crew encountered fire conditions throughout and extinguished the same. Engine 83 remained on the scene for about 2 hours before picking up and returning home. On a side note, its now out of service for the same thing again. The 4th time is a charm we hope. May 19th - Busy afternoon includes shootings, train accident, and house fire - Around 1430 hours, Company 8 and the police were dispatched to Addison Rd & Central Ave, near the firehouse, for a shooting. Before Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 could mount up, two shooting victims showed up on the front ramp and crews began treatment. Both teenage victims were suffering from gunshot wounds, 1 to the chest and the other to the arm. Both were taken to a local trauma center by Ambulance 88 with Seat Pleasant PD on board. Preliminary reports suggest they were involved in a burglary just down the street when the homeowner confronted them and both groups exchanged gunfire. Squad 8 cleared in about 10 minutes and 88 returned in about 2.5 hours. Then just after 1510 hours, Squad 8 and Chief 8A (Johnson) responded to the 3300 Blk of Kenilworth Ave, in Company 9's area, for a report of a freight train that had struck a dump truck. Units from 9 searched the area and eventually found the same. Squad 8 arrived and with no one trapped worked on spill control as oil, diesel, and hyrdraulic fluid were leaking as well as assisted EMS units with packaging the trauma patient. Squad 8 returned in about an hour. Then later about 2030 hours, Engine 82 was alerted to the 1200 Blk of Hill Rd, in Company 38's area, for a house fire. E33 arrived first to find smoke showing and advanced a line. Engine 82 arrived and had E38 reverse lay from them to a hydrant up the street. The officer briefly established command and the crew advanced a back up line to the first floor as crews found fire in the basement. As the trucks were coming from a distance (37, 22 from 46, and 55), Engine 82 did a search and assisted with ventilation and opening up. The fire was extinguished and Engine 82 picked up and returned in about an hour. May 18th - Engine 82 operates on two fires, one of them first due - Just after 1030 hours, Engine 82 was sent on the local for the side of a house "sparking" in the unit block of Peppermill Dr in Seat Pleasant. Engine 82 arrived and soon discovered a house with a working fire in the basement and requested the assignment. The crew advanced a line inside where they found heavy smoke conditions and fire in the A/D quadrant of the basement. The crew extinguished the same as units above worked to open up the floor as there was fire running the joists. The fire was extinguished and the assignment was scaled back. Chief 8A (Johnson) had the command and the units from 8 returned in about 2.5 hours. Later in the evening around 2000 hours, Engine 82 was alerted to the 11500 Blk of Homestead Dr, in Company 46's area, for a house fire. E46 arrived with smoke showing and advanced a line. Crews found a bedroom on the second floor as Engine 82 arrived in their 4th due position and picked up E33's. The crew reported to the front and stood by until a patient was sent their way. The crew assisted with patient care as a female victim was experiencing trouble breathing due to the incident. The fire was extinguished and the assignment scaled back. Engine 82 returned in about 40 minutes. May 17th - Vacant house fire followed by accident with traumas - Around 1830, Squad 8 and Chief 8A (Johnson) were alerted for a house fire in the 1900 Blk of Brooks Dr in Company 26's area. E26 arrived in the area and advised they possibly had a fire in the woods and for units to stage. Squad 8 made their way to the 5400 Blk of Walker Mill Rd, which is across from the reporting address, as Chief 26 found smoke showing from a vacant house off the roadway. Squad 8 arrived and with the orders for exterior operations only went to work removing the plywood coverings on the windows and doors. Eventually the crews were given the orders to go in and the fire was extinguished. Squad 8 worked on a search and opening up before returning in just under an hour. Ambulance 88 also made an appearance on the working fire dispatch. About a half hour after returning, Squad 8, Ambulance 88, and Chief 8A were special called to an accident with a report of 1 trapped at Sheriff Rd & Addison Rd in Company 38's area. Squad 8 and Chief 8A arrived and were put in service as the patient was able to move their foot out of the car on their own. Ambulance 88 however did transport 1 to a local trauma center. Squad 8 and Chief 8A returned quickly and the ambulance went in service in about an hour. May 16th - Squad 8 puts steak dinner on hold for evening house fire - Around 1915 hours, as the crew sat down to some nicely grilled steaks, Squad 8 was alerted to the 9500 Blk of Marlboro Pk, in Company 23's area, for a house fire. First in units arrived with smoke showing from a house and began advancing lines. Squad 8 arrived and was given the RIC assignment. The officer did a 360 as the Squad crew set up. Crews discovered a bedroom off and extinguished the same. Squad 8 picked up and returned home in just over 30 minutes. May 15th - Fatal shooting plus other traumas for Company 8 - Just after midnight, Squad 8 & Ambulance 88 were alerted for a shooting at a local establishment in the 5700 Blk of Martin Luther King Hwy in Seat Pleasant. Units arrived with police to find a male inside that had been shot once in the head after an altercation with another gentleman. A quick assessment was done and the patient was pronounced dead on the scene. Squad 8 cleared in about 20 minutes while the ambulance returned in about 40. Later in the day around 1600 hours, Ambulance 88 was alerted to Central Ave & Hampton Park, in Company 46's area, for a child on a bike struck by a vehicle. Units arrived to find the same and began treating the patient. The victim was packaged and taken to a local trauma center with head injuries by Ambulance 88 and M30. Upon clearing the hospital from the previous call, Ambulance 88 was alerted to the 7300 Blk of Landover Rd, in Company 33's area, for a pedestrian struck. Once again, units arrived to find the same, the patient was treated and packaged and taken to a local trauma center by A88 and M46. Ambulance 88 cleared this run in about an hour. May 12th - Squad runs fatal early evening accident in Kentland - Around 1930 hours, Squad 8 was alerted to Brightseat Rd & Arena Dr, in Company 33's area, for an accident with a report of 1 ejected. While enroute, PSC updated units that CPR was being done on an infant. E33 arrived to find a car that had struck a tree and split in half and confirmed a pediatric working code and began treatment. Squad 8 arrived and began assisting EMS units. One of the paramedics on board Squad 8 assisted M46 with CPR on the child and rode with them to a local trauma center while the other paramedic on Squad 8 as well as the rest of the crew tended to the other victim until M30 arrived. Unfortunately the child succumbed to her injuries. Squad 8 cleared in just over 30 minutes after picking personnel up from the hospital. May 12th - Squad 8 on early morning extrication and small evening kitchen fire - Around 0300 hours, Squad 8 was alerted to the 2200 Blk of Ritchie Marlboro, in Company 37s area, for an accident with 1 trapped. E37 arrived to find a two vehicle accident involving a car and a dump truck with 1 trapped in the vehicle. Squad 8 arrived and stabilized the vehicle removing the passenger doors and B post. The patient was removed and taken to a local hospital by EMS personnel. Squad 8 picked up and returned in about 30 minutes. Later in the evening around 1800 hours, Squad 8 was alerted on the 46 street alarm for a fire reported out in the 300 Blk of Harry S Truman Dr. E46 arrived with smoke showing from a townhouse and advanced a line. E46 found a kitchen fire and knocked the same while Squad 8 vented and opened up checking for extension. The assignment was scaled back and Squad 8 picked up and returned in just over 30 minutes. May 11th - Company 8 extricates 2, chases smoke, then Squad runs house fire - Just around 0930 hours, Squad 8 was alerted to the 6200 Blk of Central Ave, in Seat Pleasant, for an accident. The Squad arrived to find a two vehicle accident with a mini van in a ditch and the two victims trapped and called for the rest of the assignment. Engine 82, Ambulance 88 (who was clearing another call) and Chief 8A (Johnson) responded on the run. Engine 82 pulled a line and stood by while Squad 8 stabilized the vehicle removing the driver side B post and the passenger side door, and Ambulance 88 transported 1 to a local hospital. Chief 8A had the command. While picking up from the accident, crews noticed a darkening column of smoke nearby and went to investigate. Engine 82 and Squad 8 arrived in the area of Central Ave and Maryland Park Dr with a heavy concentration of smoke and began looking for the source. Unfortunately crews found out it was just a stolen SUV that had been lit on fire. Later in the afternoon 1300 hours, Squad 8 and Chief 8A responded to the 8800 Blk of Branch Ave, in Company 25's area, for a house on fire. E25 arrived to find a vacant dwelling with heavy smoke showing. Squad 8 arrived and was given the RIC assignment as units worked on the house as fire was now through the roof. Crews were backed out a few times due to loss of water related to water supply issues but the fire was eventually extinguished. Chief 8A had the Side C Division. Units from 8 picked up and returned in a little over an hour. Extrication No luck, just an auto Vacant house fire May 10th - Squad 8 on afternoon house fire in Ritchie - Just after 1400 hours, Squad 8 was alerted to the 1800 Blk of Berry La, in Company 37's area, for a house on fire. E23 arrived to find a house well involved and command initially made the decision to go with exterior operations only. Squad 8 arrived soon after as the first special service and once headway was made on the fire was directed inside to perform a search and open up. Squad 8 worked their way through the house doing their squad duties as several engine crews operated handlines inside to extinguish the fire throughout. The fire was extinguished and Squad 8 remained onscene for just over an hour to assist with overhaul. Photos courtesy of Jim Davis May 9th - Squad 8 & Ambulance 88 on rollover accident with 1 trapped - Around 0130 hours, Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 were alerted for an accident with 1 overturned and trapped at Central Ave & Jonquil Ave in Seat Pleasant. Units from 8 arrived to find a vehicle that had rolled but was upright with the victim trapped. Squad 8 stabilized the vehicle and removed the front doors and roof to allow the patient to be extricated to awaiting EMS personnel. The patient was loaded and taken to a local trauma center by the Medic Unit. Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 picked up and returned in about 30 minutes. May 5th - Engine 82 & Ambulance 88 on accident with trauma - Around 1700 hours after the ambulance returned from getting 10 refusals from an accident in 23's area, Engine 82 was redirected from a wires call and dispatched with 88 for an accident at Central Ave & Soper La in Seat Pleasant. Units from 8 arrived to find multiple injured people and called for additional EMS units as they began treating the victims. Ambulance 88 transported 1 to a local trauma center and returned in about 90 minutes and Engine 82 returned in about 20 minutes and continued back enroute to their original wires call. May 2nd - Squad 8 pops door, Ambulance 88 transports 2 from accident - Around 1630 hours, Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 were sent to Central Ave & Shady Glen Dr, in Seat Pleasant, for an auto accident. Units from 8 arrived to find multiple vehicles, multiples patients, and 1 trapped. Squad 8 quickly stabilized the vehicle and removed the passenger door while additional EMS units were called to assist. In all there were 4 patients, 2 of which were taken by Ambulance 88 to a local hospital. Squad 8 cleared in about 25 minutes and the Ambulance in just over an hour. April 29th - Engine 82 on afternoon house fire, then late night stabbing - Around 1445 hours, Engine 82 was dispatched to the 5600 Blk of Old Silver Hill Rd, in Company 26's area, for a house fire. Units arrived to find fire from the 2nd floor of a house and went to work. Engine 82 picked up a supply line, pulled a back up line , and then was given RIC duties along with TW21. Crews extinguished the fire and units started on overhaul and checking for extension. Engine 82 picked up and returned in about 90 minutes. Later that night around 2300 hours, Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 were sent to the 300 Blk of Possum Ct, in Seat Pleasant, for a report of one stabbed. Units from 8 arrived with PD to find a male that had been stabbed in the upper body. The patient was treated and taken to a local hospital by Ambulance 88. Squad 8 cleared in about 15 minutes and the Ambulance returned in just over an hour. April 26th - Bronze Medal of Valor awarded to members of Company 8 - Today was the annual Fire Department Valor Awards held in Greenbelt, MD. Among many of the well deserved recipients were two members of Seat Pleasant for a house fire that occurred last year on Seat Pleasant Drive. Career Captain Kenneth Fusco (assigned to Company 8 at the time) and Volunteer Squad Captain Kevin Brenner both received the Bronze Medal of Valor for their unusual personal risk and judgement in the removal of an elderly male trapped in the burning home. Career Captain Fusco assisted in the removal of the unconscious victim while Volunteer Captain Brenner protected the hallway with the line to make sure the victim and rescuers were able to safely escape. The elderly male has since made a full recovery from his burns and smoke injuries. Congratulations to all recipients in this years Valor Awards Ceremony. April 25th - Ambulance 88 on motorcycle accident with multiple patients - Around 1500 hours while Engine 82 and Squad 8 were on a gas leak, Ambulance 88 was alerted to MLK Hwy & Glen Willow Dr, in Company 38's area, for a motorcycle accident. Ambulance 88 arrived with E38 to find a motorcycle that had T boned a vehicle. The rider had been thrown from the bike and was suffering from numerous injuries as well as several people in the car and additional EMS units were called to assist. Ambulance 88 transported one to a local trauma center with M30 and cleared in about 90 minutes. April 24th - Squad 8 on early morning fire followed by first due shooting - Just after midnight, E29 was alerted for a fire alarm in the 2700 Blk of Keating St. Minutes later they arrived to find fire conditions in a duplex and requested the box. Squad 8 and Chief 8 (McGill) responded on the call and arrived just behind T26. Squad 8 was given the RIT assignment and did a quick 360 and stood by. The fire was extinguished and the assignment scaled back for overhaul. The units from 8 returned in just over 30 minutes. Then a few hours later, Squad 8 was alerted to a local night club in the 5900 Blk of Athena St for a shooting. Squad 8 arrived to find a person shot in the upper body and began treating them. The patient was packaged and taken to a local trauma center. A second victim that was shot was found on Benning Rd in DC and treated by DC. Squad 8 returned to service in about 15 minutes. Photo courtesy Paul Hawkins April 23rd - Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 on first due shooting - Just after 0030 hours, Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 responded to the 6600 Blk of Ronald Rd, in Seat Pleasant, for a report of one shot. Units from 8 arrived with police to find a male shot once in the upper body. The crews treated and bandaged the patient who was taken to a local trauma center by Ambulance 88. Squad 8 cleared in about 15 minutes while Ambulance 88 returned home in about 2 hours. April 22nd - Ambulance 88 runs fatal accident on Central Ave - About an hour after the Squad cleared the fire, Ambulance 88 was alerted to Central Ave near the Beltway, in Company 46's area, for a motorcycle accident. Crews arrived to find a motorcyclist who had crashed his bike and then had hit a guardrail and suffered a fatal injury after he was decapitated. E46 and Ambulance 88 remained on the scene to assist police with lighting as they investigated. Ambulance 88 returned to service in just over 2 hours. April 22nd - Squad runs afternoon fire in District Heights - Just before 1700 hours, Squad 8 was alerted to the 5500 Blk of Kershaw St, in Company 26's area, for a house fire with people trapped. E26 arrived to find a 1 story house with heavy fire conditions. Squad 8 arrived soon after and was told to search the basement. The crew made entry and went to the basement and did a quick search while the driver did some outside venting and laddering as well as opening up the garage. After the search, the crew made their way to the first floor and assisted there with opening up and overhaul. The fire was extinguished and command scaled back the assignment. Squad 8 picked up and returned in about 2 hours. Photos courtesy Paul Hawkins April 19th - Ambulance 88 on afternoon shooting - Just after 1630 hours, Ambulance 88 was alerted to the 1000 Blk of Ute Way, in Company 5's area, for a report of one shot. Units arrived with police to find a male shot in the lower body after a robbery. The crew from Ambulance 88 treated and bandaged the patient who was then taken to a local trauma center. The crew returned to service in just over an hour. April 17th - Squad 8 on night time stabbing along the DC line - Around 2230 hours, Squad 8 was alerted to the 500 Blk of 62nd Pl, in Company 5's area, for a report of a person stabbed. Squad 8 arrived with police to find a male suffering from over 10 stab wounds to the upper body. Despite all of the stab wounds, the patient was conscious and alert and refusing to answer any questions as to how it happened or who did it. Squad 8 assisted A899 and PA26 in loading the patient who was taken to a local trauma center. Squad 8 cleared in about 20 minutes. April 13th - Engine 82 has early CPR save then later operates on extrication - At 0600 hours, Engine 82 was alerted to the 5800 Blk of Belgium St, in Capitol Heights, for a medical emergency. Upon arrival they found a male with no pulse and not breathing and began CPR. The crew from 82 continued CPR as the patient was moved to the EMS unit for transport. While enroute to the hospital, a pulse and good BP returned to the patient. Engine 82 cleared in about an hour after returning from picking up personnel at PGH. Good job to all involved (E82, A38, PA26). Later in the day just before 1600 hours, Engine 82 was alerted to Hill Rd & Seat Pleasant Dr, in Company 38's area, for an accident with 1 trapped. As many of the squads in the area are still out of service (ours, 33's, and 22's), TW33 was specialed to the call as the original squad dispatched was SQ20 from Upper Marlboro. Units arrived to find a single vehicle into a pole with the lone occupant pinned. Engine 82 arrived and pulled a protection line as TW33 worked to extricate the victim. The victim was extricated in about 25 minutes and taken to a local trauma center. During the call, DC Squad 3 was also specialed to the call as they too were closer than Squad 20. Engine 82 cleared in about 35 minutes. Ironically upon returning to quarters, Company 8 was notified Squad 8 was fixed and ready to be picked up. As of early this evening, Squad 8 was back in business......for now. April 12th - Engine 82 on fatal double shooting in Seat Pleasant - Just after 1930 hours, Engine 82 was alerted to the 6800 Blk of Central Ave, in Seat Pleasant, for a shooting. The crew arrived with PGPD and found 2 victims shot in the upper body, 1 of which was not breathing. Personnel concentrated their efforts on both patients as EMS units began to arrive. Both patients were taken to a local trauma center where one died from his injuries. Engine 82 cleared in just under 30 minutes. April 10th - Engine 82 takes in fire in laundromat - At 1241 hours, Engine 82 was alerted to the 6000 Blk of Marlboro Pk, in Company 26's area, for a fire in the building. The crew arrived first to find heavy smoke inside and fire involving a dryer or two in the rear of the store. Engine 82 advanced the front jump line and extinguished the same. The assignment was scaled back to Engine 82, T29, and QT22 for overhaul and ventilation. Engine 82 returned home in about 45 minutes after picking up. April 9th - Another 2 alarm fire on Good Hope Ave, this time with 82 - Just after 2030 hours, units were alerted to the 3100 Blk of Good Hope Ave, in Company 29's area, for a fire in a high rise with people trapped. Units from 29 arrived to find heavy fire from the 4th floor and requested a second alarm. Engine 82 responded as the 1st due engine on the second alarm and was told to report to the scene. Crews had knocked the fire in the 4th floor apartment however the fire had leap frogged to the 5th floor where there was heavy fire now as well. The crew from Engine 82 made their way to the smoke filled 5th floor with their standpipe racks and knocked down the fire on that floor along with popping many doors to search for occupants as the buildings fire alarm system did not activate. The fire was extinguished and units were held for overhaul. This was the same building that Squad 8 had run a few weeks prior which also went to two alarms. First picture courtesy Company 29 April 4th - Easter Sunday brings a first due house fire followed by a CPR save - Just before 0230 hours, Engine 82 was alerted to the area of Central Ave & Cabin Branch Rd, in Seat Pleasant, for a house on fire. Engine 82 arrived in the 6600 Blk of Central Ave to find smoke showing from a house. The crew advanced the front jumpline and found a working basement fire and began making the steps. After overcoming some obstacles (there was a dresser, glasstop table, and a TV wedged in the stairway) the crew got to the main body of fire and extinguished the same. Command held Engine 82 and TW33 for overhaul and to assist investigators. Engine 82 picked up and returned in just over 2 hours. Less than 2 hours later around 0630 hours, Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 were alerted to the 200 Blk of Maryland Park Dr, in Seat Pleasant, for one not breathing in the church. Units arrived to find bystanders performing CPR and took over. By the time the patient was ready to be moved, a pulse had returned although he remained unconscious. Ambulance 88 and the medic unit transported the patient to a local hospital. Squad 8 cleared in about 30 minutes while the ambulance returned in about an hour. April 3rd - Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 run early morning pedestrians struck - At 0548 hours, Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 were alerted to the 500 Blk of Rollins Ave, in Seat Pleasant, for a pedestrian struck. Units from 8 arrived to find 2 males that had been struck by a vehicle laying in the road and requested an additional ambulance. Crews began treating both patients who were packaged and loaded into the EMS units. Squad 8 cleared in about 25 minutes while Ambulance 88 cleared in about 90 minutes after transporting 1 to a local trauma center. March 30th - Company 8 on first due house fire in Willow Hill section - Around 1718 hours Squad 8 (Engine Company was out of service), Ambulance 88, and Chief 8 (McGill) responded to the 7700 Blk of Willow Hill Dr, in Seat Pleasant, for a house fire. Units arrived to find heavy smoke conditions on the upper floor and found a bathroom that had been well involved but was just smoldering after burning itself out. E33 ran a line while Squad 8 began opening up and checking for extension. Chief 8 had the command and scaled back the incident to Squad 8 and E33. The units from 8 cleared in about 45 minutes. March 29th - Squad 8 on 2 alarm fire on Good Hope Ave - Just before 1230 hours, Squad 8 was alerted to the 3100 Blk of Good Hope Ave, in Company 29's area, for fire in a high rise. E29 arrived to find a storage room off on the first floor with extension to the ceiling area and up the pipe chase. Squad 8 arrived as the first special service and was given RIC duties and set up for the same. An additional alarm was called by command due to the extension of the fire. Crews extinguished the fire and the assignment was scaled back for overhaul and ventilation. Squad 8 cleared in just over 3 hours. March 26th - Squad 8 extricates 3 from Upper Marlboro accident - At 1500 hours, Squad 8 was alerted to the 4300 Blk of Lord Fairfax Dr, in Company 20's area, for an accident with people trapped. Units from 20 arrived and confirmed a single vehicle accident with 3 trapped and requested additional EMS units and 2 helicopters. Squad 8 arrived and stabilized the vehicle and went to work removing the doors and roof. After the victims in front were removed, the Squad crew removed the front seats and the drivers side of the vehicle to remove the victim in the rear seat. All 3 patients were taken to a local trauma center with critical injuries, 2 of which were flown. Squad 8 cleared in just under an hour. March 25th - Squad 8 & Ambulance 88 on multi fatal accident - Just before midnight, personnel from Company 8 heard police pursuing a vehicle past the firehouse and minutes later were dispatched to Addison Rd & James Farmer Way, in Seat Pleasant, for an accident with people trapped and unconscious. Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 arrived soon after and found a vehicle that had hit a telephone pole at a high rate of speed pinning all 5 occupants in the vehicle. The vehicle was pursued after firing at least 1 gunshot in the air on Central Ave leaving a local club. Due to the nature of the incident and the weapon not being recovered, the Squad crew was ordered by police to remove one victim at a time. Squad 8 stabilized the vehicle and started removing patients under the cover of PGPD as they held the victims at gunpoint while being extricated. One of the 5 pinned victims was determined to be deceased onscene as the crew worked to free the driver and 3 victims in the back. Squad 8 removed all doors and the roof freeing the driver and one rear passenger. The other two rear occupants were more challenging as the floor board had split in half and both sets of legs went through the hole while the B post and rocker panels were pushed up and over their limbs. Due to the entanglement, command called the GO TEAM as Squad 8 continued to work on freeing their legs. Eventually a second squad was called bringing RE33 however Squad 8 freed the last victim as they arrived and along with Squad 8 assisted EMS personnel in removing the last two victims. Ambulance 88 transported 1 trauma to a local trauma center. In all, 5 victims were extricated by Squad 8. One was pronounced dead on the scene and another died at the hospital. The other 3 remained in critical condition. Squad 8 cleared in just over an hour after picking up and Ambulance 88 returned in about 2 and a half hours. March 24th - Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 on fatal shooting - Just before 0100 hours, Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 were alerted to the area of Capitol Heights Bl & Gunther St, in Company 5's area, for a shooting. Units arrived with police and PA26 to find a male shot several times lying in the street. After a quick assessment, the victim was pronounced dead on the scene. The units from 8 returned to service in about 15 minutes and County Police are still investigating. March 23rd - Squad 8 and the Chiefs on small kitchen fire - Around 1800 hours, Squad 8, Chief 8 (McGill), and Chief 8A (Johnson) responded to the 500 Blk of 62nd Pl, in Company 5's area, for a kitchen fire in an apartment. The units from 8 arrived first to find a kitchen fire with a sprinkler activation. The crew did a search, opened up cabinets and walls, and extinguished the rest of the fire on the stove as well as shutting down the sprinkler system and venting the building. The crew was held out for about 30 minutes before picking up and returning home. March 20th - Engine 83 and Ambulance 88 on first due apartment fire - Around 1300 hours, Engine 83 was alerted to the 6500 Blk of Central Ave, in Seat Pleasant, on a street alarm for smoke. Engine 83 quickly arrived to find smoke showing from a 2 story apartment house and advanced a line. The box was filled out by PSC due to the original report of a working fire as the crew found a kitchen well involved and extinguished the same. After knocking down the fire, the crew vented and began overhaul. The assignment was scaled back to 2 and 1 as crews picked up. Ambulance 88 also arrived on the working fire dispatch. Units from 8 returned in about an hour. March 17th - Engine 83 on fatal evening accident in Seat Pleasant - Just after 1700 hours, Engine 83 was alerted to MLK Hwy & Addison Rd, in Seat Pleasant, for an auto accident. The engine arrived to find two vehicles off the road after a high speed collision with one of the vehicles into the back of a house and the other near an alley way. One driver was already in police custody while the driver of the other vehicle was still strapped in with multiple injuries and not breathing. The crew quickly removed him and began life saving efforts as he was moved and transported by EMS units to a local trauma center where he was pronounced dead. Engine 83 returned in about 20 minutes. March 13th - Company 8 on mid morning first due house fire - At 1018 hours, Engine 83, Ambulance 88, and Chief 8B (Brenner) responded to the 6800 Blk of Pepper St, in Seat Pleasant, for a house fire. Units from 8 arrived to find a two story house with smoke showing from the first floor. The crew quickly advanced a line and found a room well off with extension to the hallway and extinguished the same. Additional crews checked the floor above for extension while TW33 opened up for the crew from 83. Chief 8B had the command and the assignment was scaled back to 2 and 1 shortly after. Units from 8 cleared in about 90 minutes. March 12th - E83 on early morning fire in Forestville then afternoon trauma - Around 0545 hour, Engine 83 was alerted to the intersection of Marlboro Pk & Forestville Rd, in Company 23's area, for a building fire. Units arrived in the 7700 Blk of Marlboro Pk to find smoke showing from a vacant strip mall. Engine 83 arrived and took a position in the rear with their own hydrant and picked up the connections. Crews found fire in the rear of one of the stores and extinguished the same. Engine 83 rendered aid to one of the many homeless people living in the rear storage rooms of the vacant buildings that had to be removed. The fire was extinguished and is currently under investigation. Engine 83 picked up and returned in just over an hour. Later in the day around 1530 hours, Engine 83 was alerted to the 6100 Blk of Central Ave, in Seat Pleasant, for an injured police officer. The crew arrived to find two police officers with injuries from a K9. The one officer had a minor injury while the other suffered from deep wounds to the leg and arm. Both patients were treated with the more serious one being taken to a local trauma center for treatment. Engine 83 returned in about 20 minutes. We wish both officers a quick recovery from their injuries. March 11th - Engine 83 on early morning apartment fire with rescues - At 0330 hours, Engine 83 was alerted to the 6400 Blk of Hil Mar Dr, in Company 26's area, for an apartment fire with people trapped. E26 arrived to find heavy fire from the first floor with numerous people trapped on the floors above. Engine 83 arrived and supplied E23 and eventually E37 as the crew from 83 pulled an additional line and ran it to the top floor to check the cockloft. While on the 3rd floor the crew forced entry to an apartment and found a family that needed to be evacuated. One of the crew members from 83 assisted them to the balcony where they were assisted down via ground ladder while the rest of the crew continued with a search of the other apartments. In addition to these 3, many others were rescued by companies onscene. The fire was extinguished and Engine 83 remained on the scene for overhaul returning to service in just over an hour. March 10th - Squad 8 on afternoon house fire in Boulevard Heights - Around 1545 hours Squad 8 was alerted to the 2300 Blk of Lakewood St, in Company 17's area, for a house fire. Units arrived to find a 2 story house with smoke showing. Squad 8 arrived and was given the RIC duties as crews found set fires on the 2nd floor as well as the basement. The Squad crew was then reassigned to conduct a secondary search of the second floor and then overhauled the second floor and basement. The fire was extinguished and is currently under investigation. Squad 8 cleared in about 2 1/2 hours. March 9th - Seat Pleasant mourns the loss of PFC Thomas Jensen #2853 - Along with PGPD, family, friends, and everyone that knew him, the Seat Pleasant Volunteer Fire Company mourns the loss of PFC Thomas Jensen who died in the line of duty. The Prince George’s County Police Department is mourning the loss of Police Officer First Class Thomas P. Jensen, who died last night at Prince George’s Hospital Center after courageously battling injuries he received while responding to an emergency call on February 27, 2010. Officer Jensen, 27, was a five year veteran of the police department assigned to the Hyattsville District Station, Squad 22. Officer Jensen was critically injured while responding to a call to assist the fire department with a disorderly person reportedly under the influence of PCP. He struck a sheet of black ice on Baltimore Avenue at Greenbelt Road in College Park at 6:55 a.m. on February 27th causing his vehicle to crash into a telephone pole.Officer Jensen had been treated in the Intensive Care Unit at Prince George’s Hospital Center since the crash. He died last night from injuries he received in the crash at approximately 9:30 p.m. “Officer Jensen was a beloved member of our police family and his loss is a huge blow to all of us,” stated Chief of Police Roberto Hylton. “I worked with Officer Jensen’s father and remember when Officer Jensen was born. This loss is made all the more difficult because of the close ties with the Jensen family. Officer Jensen grew up in Prince George’s County; he is truly one of our own.” Officer Jensen is the son of retired Sergeant Tom Jensen and leaves behind his wife of five months, Kristelle. Information on funeral arrangements will be forthcoming. Rest in peace brother. March 7th - Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 on another first due fire - Just after 0530 hours, Squad 8 was alerted for the Hazmat Box in the 5900 Blk of Seat Pleasant Dr for the gas station on fire. Just prior to dispatch, PSC had been looking for the Squad on the air and requested via phone that Company 8 take the Squad. Squad 8 arrived first at the Seat Pleasant BP in the 5800 Blk of MLK Hwy with heavy fire conditions throughout. The crew from Squad 8 split up and worked to secure many propane tanks, force entry, and search as there was a report of the cashier still trapped inside (the fire was started by an unknown male with the employee still inside). Incoming engine companies worked to extinguish the fire but it got ahead of them and up into the roof with a partial collapse so units were pulled out by command. Master streams worked to extinguish the rest of the fire and the initial search by Squad 8 was negative. Ambulance 88 of course showed up on the working fire dispatch. Squad 8 remained onscene for just over 4 hours for extensive overhaul and to assist investigators. This is the 3rd building to burn at this intersection since the first of the year. Squad 8 arrived with police to find a male that had been hit in the lower body twice after a drive by. The crew began treating the patient who was then turned over to EMS personnel upon their arrival and taken to a local trauma center. Squad 8 cleared in about 15 minutes. March 2nd - Engine and the B Chief take in first due fire - Exactly 12 hours after the fire on Booker Pl, Engine 8 and Chief 8B (Brenner) responded to the 6200 Blk of Addison Rd, in Seat Pleasant, for a house on fire. Units from 8 quickly arrived to find smoke showing and advanced a line while Chief 8B established command. Upon entry, the crew from 8 found a small room off and extinguished the same while SQ33 worked to open up and search. Command quickly scaled back the assignment to E8, SQ33, and T26 for overhaul. The units from 8 returned to service in about an hour. March 2nd - Squad 8 & Chief 8A on duplex in Chapel Oaks - Just after 0900 hours, Squad 8 and Chief 8A (Johnson) responded to the 800 Blk of Booker Pl, in Company 38's area, for a house on fire. Units arrived to find a 2 story duplex with heavy smoke from the top floor. Squad 8's crew threw ladders and forced a door in the rear, opened up, and searched the first floor. Chief 8A was given the exposure sector as units worked to extinguish the fire. The fire was extinguished a short time later and Squad 8 was held for overhaul. The units from 8 returned in just over an hour. February 28th - Engine 83 and Ambulance 88 on first due house fire - Around 1400 hours, Engine 83 was alerted to the unit block of Gentry La, in Seat Pleasant, for a house fire. Engine 83 arrived with smoke showing and their own hydrant and advanced the bumper line. The crew made entry and made their way to the rear of the house where they found a few rooms off and extinguished the same. Additional engines stood by while the truck companies assisted with opening up and overhaul. Ambulance 88 made their way to the scene on the working fire dispatch. Crews from 8 picked up and returned in about 2 hours. February 25th - Squad 8 on first due house fire along MLK Hwy - Around 2030 hours, while returning from a 27 Box, Squad 8 was alerted to the intersection of MLK Hwy & Addison Rd, in Seat Pleasant, for a house on fire. Squad 8 arrived along with E38 to find a vacant house (no not the blue one, that one is next door) in the 5800 Blk MLK Hwy with fire showing from the rear. Squad 8 forced entry through the iron gate door and advanced along with the engine company opening up and searching. Crews made their way to the rear where they encountered heavy fire conditions and extinguished the same. Squad 8 remained on scene for about 90 minutes checking for extension and overhaul. February 24th - Engine 82 on District Heights townhouse fire - Just after 1700 hours, Engine 82 was alerted 4th due to the 5500 Blk of Rollins La, in Company 26's area, for a townhouse fire. E26 arrived to find a working fire in the basement as Engine 82 arrived second and secured their water supply. The crew from 82 advanced a back up line to the first floor and performed a search while the driver threw some ladders. After complications with the first line, Engine 82 redeployed their line to the basement and extinguished the room that was on fire. Shortly after, the incident was scaled back for overhaul and mop up. Engine 82 returned in about an hour. February 20th - No more eating fresh for awhile in Seat Pleasant - Just after 0600 hours, Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 were alerted for an injured person at Central Ave & Addison Rd in Seat Pleasant. Units from Company 8 arrived to the rear of the firehouse in Addison Plaza to find a vehicle that had driven into and through a Subway sandwhich shop. Crews surveyed the damage and treated two occupants of the vehicle. The crew from Ambulance 88 transported both to a local hospital for a check up. The driver suggested it was "black ice" that made him drive over the parking barrier, the curb, over the sidewalk, and through the glass and concrete all the way to the sandwhich bar inside. Oh well, more China Sky and Taco Bell for awhile. Squad 8 cleared a short time later while the Ambulance returned in just over an hour. February 19th - Engine 82 on afternoon apartment fire in Landover - Around 1440 hours, Engine 82 was alerted to the 3000 Blk of Brightseat Rd, in Company 33's area, for fire in the building. E33 arrived to find a fire in a second floor apartment with extension. Engine 82 arrived and picked up E38's line and then advanced a secondary line into the adjoining apartment and along with Truck 9 checked for extension. The fire was extinguished with minimal extension and the assignement was scaled back. Engine 82 picked up and returned to service in about 45 minutes. February 17th - Squad and A Chief on afternoon house fire - Around mid day, Squad 8 and Chief 8A (Johnson) responded to the 3500 Blk of 26th Ave, in Company 29's area, for a house fire. E29 arrived first and found smoke showing from the attic area and ran a line. The crew found fire in the kitchen with extension to the cabinets and attic area. Squad 8 arrived as the first special service and went to work venting and opening up. The fire was quickly extinguished and the assignment was scaled back. The units from 8 returned in just over an hour. February 16th - Presidents Day brings many calls, a shooting, and trauma - Well another holiday came upon us on the 15th and just like the others, county personnel were removed from the station to save the county money. This left staffing up to the volunteers for 24 hours. At 0002 hours on the 16th while Ambulance 88 was off on another medic local in 5's area, Squad 8 was alerted to 71st St & Seat Pleasant Dr for a shooting. Squad 8 arrived with police to find a male shot once in the upper body. While treating the victim, it was noticed that his car had been shot multiple times and additional gunshots were heard in the area. The patient was load and taken to a local trauma center. Squad 8 cleared in about 20 minutes. Later in the morning around 0615 hrs, Ambulance 88 was alerted for a pedestrian struck at MLK Hwy & Greenleaf Rd in Company 33's area. Units arrived to find a female who was suffering from traumatic injuries and unconscious after being struck by a vehicle. The patient was loaded and taken to a local trauma center by Ambulance 88 who cleared about 90 minutes later. In all, the volunteers handled 31 runs during the 24 hour holiday. February 14th - Company has one of the busiest weeks ever due to storms - Well with over 4 feet of snow in a week, crews have been kept busy. Units from 8 have been going non stop since it began 9 days ago running wires down, structural collapses due to the weight of the snow, and medic locals like you wouldnt believe. Squad 8 has spent much of its time barreling through the snow and pulling ambulances and medic units who were stuck in snow banks and drifts, running medic locals by themselves to see if people actually needed to go to the hospital, and on many occasions responding to medic locals, loading the patient in the squad, and taking them to a passable road to meet up with an ambulance. Crews also used the companies 4 wheel drive Tahoe to make it back into neighborhoods that apparatus couldnt make it too. At that point the crew would evaluate the patient and if needed transport the patient to an awaiting ambulance or medic unit. During the 9 days since the storm, Company 8 has responded to 321 runs (an average of about 36 runs daily) and have missed that wonderful thing called sleep. We hope that spring arrives soon. February 9th/10th - More snow for the region makes a bad situation worse - It snowed alot...AGAIN. Up to 2 more feet of snow fell just days after the previous storm. Roads continue to be blocked with snow and ice and getting around is near impossible. Crews continue to be busy with runs. Overall update to come. February 5th/6th - Blizzard of 2010 hits region - It snowed......ALOT. Crews are busy with runs as over 30 inches of snow has fallen. Synopsis to follow when things calm down and get back to normal. February 3rd - E 82 alerted to Ritchie house fire, lands Trooper 2 for victim - Just before 1100 hours, units were dispatched to the 2400 Blk of Oak Glen Way, in Company 37's area, for a house fire. E37 arrived to find fire conditions in the basement with a burned child. Engine 82 usually would have run this however they were stuck at time of dispatch picking up from an outside fire in the first due. Upon clearing a short time later, Engine 82 was sent to the house fire and was given the task of setting up the LZ for MSP Trooper 2 to transport the burned child. The crew arrived and stood by as the Trooper landed and the burned child was moved to the helicopter for transport. The fire was extinguished and the child was taken to a burn unit where he is recovering. Engine 82 cleared in about 30 minutes. February 2nd - Engine 82 on early morning junkyard fire - Just after 0030 hours, E26 was alerted for an auto fire in the 5900 Blk of Walker Mill Rd. Upon arrival, several vehicles, junk, and debris were found to be burning and an additional engine and truck were called to assist. Engine 82 arrived and established a water supply for E26 and assisted with extinguishment and extensive overhaul. Engine 82 picked up and cleared in about 90 minutes. February 1st - Squad 8 runs 2nd alarm in Landover Hills - Just before 1330 hours, units were dispatched to the 3800 Blk of 64th Ave, in Company 30's area, for fire in a public storage unit. Units arrived to find heavy fire conditions involving multiple units and requested a task force quickly followed by the second alarm bringing Squad 8 to the scene. Squad 8 arrived and sat in staging for a bit until the crew was deployed to assist with extensive overhaul. Squad 8 picked up and returned in about 2 1/2 hours. January 27th - Engine 83 runs another fatal accident in Seat Pleasant - Just after 1500 hours, Engine 83 was alerted to the 6200 Blk of Addison Rd, in Seat Pleasant, for an auto accident. The engine quickly arrived and found a single vehicle that had gone off the road with a single patient. After a quick evaluation, the patient was found to be semi conscious and a medic unit was called to the scene. The crew treated the patient who was taken by awaiting EMS units to a local hospital. Upon arrival at the hospital, the patient coded. Despite efforts of EMS and hospital personnel, the patient was pronounced dead a short time later. Engine 83 cleared the scene in about 20 minutes. January 26th - Engine 83 runs fatal accident on Central Ave - Just before 1700 hours, Engine 83 was alerted to Central Ave & Addison Rd, by the firehouse, for an accident involving a motorcycle and a report of one not breathing. Engine 83 found the accident moments later in the 6200 Blk of Central Ave and began to assess the victim. After the initial assessment and due to obvious injuries the patient was a priority 4. The crew then focused attention to the other victims in the vehicle who were taken to a local hospital for a check up. Engine 83 remained on scene for about 2 hours awaiting the medical examiner. During this time, Central Ave along with East Capitol St were closed making a mess of rush hour. January 24th - Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 on pedestrian struck - Around 0030 hours, Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 were alerted to Central Ave & Zelma Ave, in Seat Pleasant, for a pedestrian struck. Units from 8 arrived soon after to find a female who had been struck by a vehicle, who fled the scene, and was suffering from serious fractures to both legs. Crews worked to stabilize the injuries and transfer the patient to the back of A88 where she was taken to a local trauma center. Squad 8 cleared in about 20 minutes and the ambulance returned to service much later. January 19th - Squad 8 assists with traumas & cars on top of each other - Around 1800 hours, Squad 8 was alerted to the Beltway @ Central Ave for an accident. While enroute, the location of the accident changed many times until it was finally pinned down to Central Ave between the Beltway and Harry S Truman Dr in Company 46's area. Units arrived to find 7 vehicles involved including several cars on top of each other. Squad 8 arrived and provided lights, stabilized the vehicles, and assisted with removal of trauma victims. All patients were removed and taken to local hospitals and trauma centers. Squad 8 returned in just over 30 minutes. January 17th - Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 on evening double shooting - Just after 2000 hours, Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 were alerted to the unit block of Tunic Ave, in Company 5's area, for one shot. While enroute, PSC advised they had reports of two shot and an additional EMS unit was requested by Squad 8's officer. Units arrived with police to find a male shot once in the face and a female shot in the leg after the house was sprayed with bullets. Crews treated both patients and were taken to a local trauma center by EMS units. Squad 8 cleared in about 20 minutes and the Ambulance a short time later. January 16th - Squad 8 first arriving special service on fatal fire - Just before 0530 hours, Squad 8 was alerted to the 3600 Blk of Dunlap St, in Company 29's area, for a house on fire with people trapped. E29 arrived to find a 2 story duplex with fire showing from the second floor and initial reports of multiple people trapped. Squad 8 arrived first and was given the RIT duties per 3rd Battalion SOP and split as part of the crew assisted with CPR and taking a victim that had just been removed with M29 to their unit as the rest of the crew made access to the rear to do a size up and force entry. The crew reconvened in front and stood by as units worked to extinguish the fire and check for extension. The victim that was removed was taken to a local burn center and unfortunately succumbed to her injuries. Squad 8 packed up and returned home in about an hour. January 13th - Squad 8 extricates two in Chapel Oaks - Around 2240 hours, Squad 8 was alerted to the 1100 Blk of 60th Ave, in Company 38's area, for a car into a house with people trapped. Units arrived to find a vehicle that had run up into a yard, through some trees, and eventually coming to rest against a house. Squad 8 arrived and stabilized the vehicle and then went to work with a chainsaw removing bushes and shrubs to help gain access to the vehicle. Once access was made, the crew removed all doors as well as the roof allowing the patients to be extricated. Both were packaged and taken to a local trauma center by EMS units. Squad 8 picked up and returned in about 45 minutes. January 12th - Squad 8 removes door during evening accident - Around 1830 hours, Squad 8 was alerted for an accident in the 1000 Blk of Eastern Ave, along the DC line in 38's area, for an accident. Squad 8 arrived first to find two vehicles involved with one trapped. Squad 8 stabilized the vehicle and worked on removing the door. After just a brief few minutes, the door was removed and EMS crews assisted by Squad 8 personnel removed the patient who was taken to a local hospital. Squad 8 cleared in about 20 minutes. January 8th - Squad 8 & Ambulance 88 on first due fatal shooting - Just after 2200 hours, Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 were alerted to the 300 Blk of Possum Ct, in Seat Pleasant, for a report of one shot. Crews arrived with police to find a male outside shot in the head. After a quick assessment, the patient unfortunately was pronounced dead. County police are still investigating as their have been a rash of robberies in that area. The units from 8 returned in about 20 minutes with Engine 83 returning a few hours later for the wash down. January 7th - Engine 83 on first due rowhouse fire - Around 1514 hours, Engine 83 was alerted for a house fire in the 7400-Blk of Central Ave in Seat Pleasant. The crew arrived in the area and began looking. The crew headed down Drumlea Rd (block behind Central Ave) and found smoke coming from an end of the row house in the 7300 Blk of Calder Dr and advanced a line. The crew was met with heavy smoke conditions inside and after a brief search found the basement stairs and advanced through the fire finding several rooms off. The crew from 8 quickly knocked the fire while other crews opened up and checked the floor above. The crew from Engine 83 remained onscene for just over 2 hours to check for extension and overhaul. Top two pictures courtesy Ritchie Volunteers January 4th - Squad 8 responds to early morning house fire in District Heights - Just around 0730 hours, Squad 8 was alerted to the 5500 Blk of Old Silver Hill Rd, in Company 26's area, for fire in the attic of a house. E26 arrived to find smoke showing from the roof and advanced a line. Squad 8 arrived soon after and was given the RIT duties as crews worked to make entry and get to the fire conditions in the attic. The fire was extinguished and the assignment scaled back. Squad 8 picked up and returned in just over 30 minutes. January 3rd - Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 run first due extrication - At 0944 hours, Squad 8 & Ambulance 88 were alerted to Central Ave & Shady Glen Dr, in Seat Pleasant, for an accident. While enroute PSC advised they were receiving reports of one trapped and were upgrading the assignment. The units from 8 arrived and found a multi vehicle accident and confirmed 1 trapped. Squad 8 went to work stabilizing and removing one door to allow the patient to be removed. The patient was loaded and taken to a local trauma center by Ambulance 88. Squad 8 returned in about 25 minutes and the Ambulance in just over an hour. January 3rd - Engine 83 & Ambulance 88 on first due store front fire - Around 0215 hours, Engine 83 was alerted to the area of Martin Luther King Hwy & Addison Rd, in Seat Pleasant, for smoke from a building. Engine 83 arrived in the 5900 Blk of MLK Hwy to find a strip mall with a fire alarm activated and water coming from beneath the roll down doors. The crew pulled a line while Tower 33 worked at opening up. Once the doors were up and entry was made, heavy smoke conditions were found inside the store. The crew from 83 found some shelving and a freezer unit on fire and extinguished the rest of what little the sprinkler system had kept in check. The assignment was scaled back and after unfreezing supply and attack lines (wind chills were below zero) and reracking them, the Company returned in about 90 minutes. Ambulance 88 also responded on the first due run. Special thanks to E17 for picking up our line. January 2nd - Ambulance 88 goes to house fire with injured firefighters - Around 1600 hours, units responded to the 5700 Blk of Gloria Dr, in Company 29's area, for a house on fire. Heavy fire was encountered throughout and during the second set of evacuation tones, the floor gave way and a firefighter fell to the basement. The injured firefighter was quickly removed but with minor injuries and burns to other firefighters, additional EMS units were called to the scene bringing Ambulance 88. The crew arrived and stood by for over two hours until operations had ceased. All firefighters were treated onscene or transported and are expected to be fine. Our prayers go out for their speedy recovery.
